Not illustrated. 1890 Excerpt: ...Eureka, the tails pass into the " plate house," where there are thirty-six sluices 5 ft. long and 15 in. wide covered with silver-plated copper plates; the tails are turned on to these plates; clear water is run on each sluice. The plates are soon worn and require replating, which is done in the mill. The yield of the plate house is about $.300 per month, which a little more than pays expenses. The loss of quicksilver in the mill per ton of ore is 0.27 oz. The gold at the Plumas Eureka varies in fineness, that from the batteries and first copper plates is 700 fine, while that from the pans varies from 500 to.018 in fineness. The amalgam yields 20 per cent, of its weight in gold. This mill formerly used blanket sluices and the Patton pan and concentrators. These are now thrown out for Hendy's concentrators. The tailings in 1888 assayed SI.50 to $2 a ton as a maximum, when formerly they ran from S4 to $7 above the buddle, and So below it. The Paine and Stevens buddle was formerly used here, but its use has been discontinued. During the first year that there were twenty-two Hendy's concentrators in the mill, the repairs did not amount to 85 a concentrator, and were all to the Babbitt metal boxes of the vertical shaft. The concentrators have to be stopped occasionally to be cleaned from the gum in the boxes. This should be done every seven or eight weeks, but it is not done oftener than once in three months. If this was carefully attended to the probability is that there would be hardly any repairs to the concentrators. The discharge from all the concentrators runs into a sluice composed of four sluices side by side, 50 ft. long, 10 in. wide, and 16 in. high. Across these, riffle bars 1 in. wide are placed every 12 ft. One of these is placed in positi...
